Consumer Brands Association

Arlington, Virginia

Davis Carter Scott (DCS Design) has developed a close relationship with the Consumer Brands Association (formerly known as Grocery Manufacturers Association) over the past 15 years, having both designed and renovated their current Washington headquarters in that time. The 110 year old non-profit wanted a trusted partner to help guide their Arlington, VA relocation. They saw the move as an opportunity to rethink their current workplace with the goal of becoming more efficient and creating a vision for how they will work in a more fast-paced and connected future.

DCS Design conducted visioning exercises with leadership which included site tours and surveys. With an eye toward forward thinking and embracing change, it was determined the new space will include internal glass front offices with low panel workstations in open areas along the exterior windows. Additionally, this layout offered a design solution which enhanced connectivity, while mitigating inefficient spaces that would result from placing offices along the building’s irregular window line. The space also features a large staff lunchroom and conference center located along the perimeter with views across the Potomac River.

The new program features additional conference rooms and open collaboration areas to encourage an interactive culture within the office. A lounge area off the lunchroom creates a more casual, relaxed environment. Three huddle/phone rooms provide areas for private conversation or quiet work. Furniture with integrated technology including power and data connectivity allow for greater mobility.

Branding is an important feature within the space, CBA serves as the voice for more than 250 leading food, beverage and consumer product companies whose mission is to feed and nourish the United States. The elevator lobby leading toward the reception serves as a gallery space with images illustrating food research and development championed by the organization. Light wood and white finishes punctuated by red accents create a clean and modern aesthetic, also tying CBA’s logo into the space. Clear glass railings on the connecting stairway offer a seamless transition between floors. The glass fronts used in all offices and conference rooms increase visibility and promote connectivity and collaboration, the very work environment CBA believes will lead their mission into the next century.
