The Fishing School, Washington, DC
For 20 years, The Fishing School (TFS) has improved the lives of more than 2,500 under-served children and families living in Washington, D.C. Through academic-focused after school and summer programs, as well as dynamic parental support initiatives, TFS empowers children and families to overcome socioeconomic barriers. DCS was approached by a local contractor to spearhead the pro-bono design of a new ‘Child and Family Support Center’ which had been secretly selected by Extreme Makeover Home Edition as the worthy recipient of the most aggressive show the program has attempted to date. While the existing school was merely a converted residence, the proposed design as based on the urgent needs of the organization required over 6,000 square feet of area. To illuminate the time frame behind the scenes of such an endeavor, DCS met with the show’s producers on a Tuesday and had the schematic design completed the following Thursday, compressing the normal design schedule from what usually takes months into a 48-hour span. DCS was also responsible for recruiting all the necessary engineering consultant’s who had to similarly donate their time while completing the task on schedule. The greatest challenges with the design were coordinating the donated materials with the design and working with the District to acquire all the necessary permits.
