IBM - 10401 Fernwood Road (aka “The Rusty Bucket”), Bethesda, MD
Built in the late 1960’s, 10401 Fernwood Road was the first building to use certain steel. However, by 1990, the exterior skin had deteriorated to the point where the entire facade of 250,000 SF, three-story office building had to be replaced. A new unitized curtain wall system, consisting of the aluminum framing, glass and granite in-fill panels , replaced the existing facade in vertical segments. Every effort was made to ensure and minimize disturbance to occupied offices. As such, this was limited to the outer 30” of floor space for a period of 48 hours per individual office.
