Columbia Capital, Alexandria, VA
Paying homage to and celebrating the history and colorful past of the two largest pre-Civil War buildings remaining along The City of Alexandria’s riverfront corridor was the most important design goal for Columbia Capital’s new office. The buildings’ cavernous interiors and strong utilitarian lines physically and thematically convey early commerce in the city, as well as Columbia Capital’s modern business acumen. Revering its history and significance to the City of Alexandria, the design team salvaged and re-used as many of the historic interior elements as possible, while creating a new, bright, open and contemporary 21st Century office space. The most prominent historic elements which were salvaged and reused in the updated design are the exposed interior brick walls, natural wood floors, and exposed wood beams.
